Acne (acne vulgaris), a disease of the hair follicles. It
affects both males and females at puberty or adolescent age. It normally
appears on the chest, face, and back. Acne cannot be triggered by a bacteria,
but bacteria can play a role in its formation. Acne can be treated with some
drugs or cosmetics available in pharmaceutical stores or cosmetic counters that
do not require prescription.
When acne becomes tougher, a physician should be consulted.
Acne has proven to be cause of psychological changes in some individuals,
thereby leading to social withdrawal and at times depression. If acne is not treated,
it can result in disfiguring scars and is difficult to treat. Some societies
believe that acne occurs as a result of dirtiness or lack of bathing. Acne does
not occur as a result of dirt on the skin or in the pores. Scrubbing can trigger
acne or make existing one worse.
Acne shows on the skin as congested pores (often called
blackheads or whiteheads), red bumps that are tender (pimples), pustules, cysts
(deep pimples, boils). Acne may be mistaken for some skin conditions like:
pseudofolliculitis, folliculitis, and rosacea.
Causes.
Causes of acne is known to be idiopathic. Acne occurs when
oil glands that attaches to hair follicle are stimulated during puberty by high
levels of male hormones. Sebum oil when associated with increased oil
production can cause change in the way the cells of the skin mature thereby
resulting in clogged hair follicles. These clogged hair follicles increases,
thereby causing a bump. As the hair follicles increases in size, the wall may
break and allows irritating substances and skin bacteria to get assess into the
deeper layers of the skin, causing inflammation. This inflammation may be superficial
(pustule) or skin deep (pimple or cyst).
How to get rid of
acne
Factors that does not determine acne include:
Heredity. Acne cannot be hereditary with exception of severe
ones.
Food. Most times parents do tell their children to avoid
greasy and fried foods or junk foods. These foods may be bad when consumed, but
they do not play a role in causing acne or making it to be worse
Dirt and sweat do not cause acne.
Stress also do not cause acne
Occasionally the following factors contributes in causing
acne.
Pressure. Such as pressure from helmet, chin straps, and
suspenders.
Drugs. Certain drugs can cause or worsen acne. Such drugs
include steroids and anticonvulsant medications.
Occupations. When some people expose themselves to some
industrial products like cutting oils.
Cosmetics. Always read the ingredients of cosmetic products
before buying. Water based cosmetics are safer to use.

can make bumps to be redder and larger.
Mild cleansers. Wash twice or once every day with mild
antiseptic soaps. These will keep your skin clean and minimize skin irritation
and sensitivity.
Retinol. This contains derivative vitamin A that fights off
acne and also promotes skin peeling.
Antibacterial cleansers. They can be in form of lotions,
creams or gels. They are applied on the affected areas. They contain
ingredients like: benzoyl peroxide, sulfur and resorcinol which kills surface
bacteria on the skin. A known brand that is normally advertised on televisions
is (Pro Activ).
Reduce the oil. Use toner or astringent to wipe away oil.
Many brands are available in pharmacies and cosmetic shops. Certain products
containing glycolic acid or alpha hydroxyl acids cleanses excess oil.
